my newfound favorite film.
i watched once and stopped 1 min in to watch something else more fluffy instead, found it too disturbing. i felt drawn back to it and watched again, only to fall asleep midway. i felt compelled once again to watch to the end and now it is my favorite film. reminds me of my favorite band of all time. first time i heard them, i hated their music. then it grew on me and now for almost 20 yrs they've shaped my soul and identity in ways i still don't understand but couldn't live without their music.
i was captivated through this entire film, then at the end i cried. then laughed hysterically. and cried some more. a perfect representation of the cosmic joke. the holy grail you seek, it doesn't matter. the holy mountain truth seekers were only surrounded by a film crew and flipped the table over to go home and live real life as it is. the monty python guys thought they'd found a new castle, finally found the holy grail, but only ended up running into the same french dudes that mocked them in the beginning and threw live animals at them, then got shit dumped on them and then just got arrested. film crew, police, interrupting their whole "epic moment". moral of the story is, there is no holy grail. there is no holy mountain. reality is pure gold. live your life, accept your reality, cherish what you have, find the blessing and beauty in it all, no matter how mundane it may seem. after all, in the tower, they made gold from his own excrement. what you are seeking, you already have. the answers lie within yourself. the longer you stare into the abyss, the more it stares right back at you. or you could just go to mcdonalds. have it your way. have you had your break today? i'm lovin it. they forget my fries everytime anyway so what's the point?

El Topo was about a man seeking enlightenment and was made before Jodorowsky had ever smoked marijuana or taken LSD.
The Holy Mountain is the attempt to enlighten the entire society. To prepare, he found a Guru, who gave him LSD. Then after he had gathered his cast, he took them on a three month retreat to prepare, and the film itself seems to have taken six months to shoot.
When I met Jodorowsky in 2003, he called El Topo his favorite son; The Holy Mountain his troubled son; and Santa Sangre his perfect son. All three are essential works. Jodorowsky truly is Alexandro the Great.
Holy Mountain is not about being high, it is about seeing through all illusions, of which getting high very much is one of those illusions. It is a huge satire of the modern world in which the Alchemist (played by Alexandro himself) finds the most horrible people in the solar system, and then takes them on a quest that pacifies them by promising immortality - just like the regular religions!
For a film that does not go "inside" any of the characters -- we see them in beautifully framed compositions -- it is very easy to follow and never lets the viewer down. In the end, he even reveals the secret of immortality. "And here we are -- mortals, more human than ever."
I think I should note that Richard Rutowski, who worked with Oliver Stone on several of his most interesting works (like The Doors, Nixon, and U Turn), plays the character Axon.
I believe The Holy Mountain may be the most perfect Utopian vision ever put on film.
And if someone tried to make a film like this today, they'd probably be arrested.

Profundly disturbing.
It is an iniciation to the metaphysical reality that happens through simbology and the tale of the climbing of each and every one's mountain. Prepare yourself, it takes you to digest!
This kind of movie would never been possible to makes nowadays with nudity in children of such a young age, and makes ou think about the boundaries of madness and genious.
Truly remarkable, a piece of timeless art of Cinema.
